Each year, Operation Lifesaver's network of authorized volunteers conduct free programs on rail safety education for hundreds of groups around the country.

Most are volunteers donating personal time to speak with schoolchildren, community organizations, driver ed classes, professional truck and bus drivers, emergency response personnel and law enforcement officers. No matter where they're from, our dedicated volunteers share a common goal: To reduce the likelihood of collisions between people/vehicles and trains through rail safety education. Become a Volunteer

If you enjoy public speaking and would like to tell people about safety around the rails, please contact your State Coordinator about becoming an Operation Lifesaver Authorized Volunteer.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Complete Authorized Volunteer E-Learning ("The AVE") Course.
  • Conduct a successful full public activity within 90 days of completeing the course.
  • Agree and abide by all policies and procedures in the Volunteer Application.
  • Provide a minimum of four activities per year to maintain your status.

About Operation Lifesaver

Operation Lifesaver’s mission is to end collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on rail property through a nationwide network of volunteers who work to educate people about rail safety. Our national office in Alexandria, VA, supports state programs, developing videos, educational brochures, instructional information and other materials for audiences of all ages. Our state coordinators are located in all 50 states.
