Operation Lifesaver Sponsoring Teams at Teen Distracted Driving Summit
WASHINGTON, DC, November 21, 2012 – Rail safety education nonprofit Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI, www.oli.org) is sponsoring three youth teams at the December 2-3, 2012 Teen Distracted Driving Prevention Summit hosted by the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS, www.noys.org). The Summit, which will be held in Washington, DC, offers teens and adults across the nation the opportunity to take the lead in creating solutions to end distracted driving. The event’s Twitter hashtag is #TDDSummit2012.
“Operation Lifesaver is proud to empower these six young people from high schools in Sherman Oaks, California; Baltimore, Maryland; and New York, New York to attend the conference and help address the issue of distraction around train tracks,” said Operation Lifesaver President Helen M. Sramek. “Our sponsored teams will develop tools for a national youth education campaign to showcase the importance of staying focused around railroad tracks. Studies have shown that distraction around tracks can be deadly. These teens will make an impact in their communities by raising awareness of the dangers at highway-rail crossings and railroad property.”
OLI recently released a video, (www.oli.org/newdriver) with important safety information and tips to help new drivers safely navigate all highway-rail grade crossings. Operation Lifesaver’s award-winning Distracted Driver and Distracted Pedestrian public service announcements (http://bit.ly/T3eSvl) also illustrate the importance of staying focused around tracks and trains.
