WMATA partners with Operation Lifesaver on “Bad Move” pedestrian safety campaign
WASHINGTON, DC, November 18, 2011 – The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA, www.wmata.com) is teaming up with rail safety nonprofit Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI, www.oli.org) to raise awareness as part of OLI’s “Bad Move” pedestrian safety campaign. Campaign posters are now on board 150 Metrobuses throughout the WMATA system. The posters include a safety message and a QR (Quick Response) code that links to a dramatic 60-second public service announcement (PSA) when scanned by smart phones that have a QR code reader app.

“WMATA is the latest transit agency in the U.S. to incorporate our ‘Bad Move’ interactive posters into their customer safety education efforts,” said OLI President Helen M. Sramek. “We want to remind WMATA patrons that walking on or near transit, commuter, or freight rail tracks, except at designated crossings, is always a bad move.”
WMATA Chief Safety Officer James Dougherty said, “WMATA is happy to support Operation Lifesaver’s pedestrian safety campaign, as we share their deep commitment to safety.”
Sramek noted that 10 transit agencies have joined the Operation Lifesaver “Bad Move” rail-pedestrian safety poster campaign. The agencies include: Capital MetroRail, Austin, TX; Central Arkansas Transit Authority, North Little Rock, AR; Charlotte Area Transit System, NC; Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, OH; Hampton Roads Transit, Norfolk, VA; Memphis Area Transit Authority, TN; Metro Transit, St. Louis, MO; Music City Transit, Knoxville, TN; Sound Transit, Seattle, WA; and WMATA, Washington, DC.
“The ‘Bad Move’ campaign is intended to reduce pedestrian-train deaths and injuries,” said OLI President Helen M. Sramek. “We are gratified that our transit safety partners are helping Operation Lifesaver reach Americans in these metropolitan areas.”
Operation Lifesaver (www.oli.org) is a national, non-profit safety education group whose goal is to eliminate deaths and injuries at railroad crossings and along railroad rights of way. It has programs in all 50 states with trained and certified presenters who provide free talks to raise the public’s safety awareness around tracks and trains.
