Ohio has around 5,100 miles of railroad tracks and over 5,600 public highway-rail crossings at grade. 70% of these crossings are active (lights or lights & gates) 30% are passive (Crossbuck & regulatory sign) Since 2020, 77% of all vehicle-train collisions in Ohio have occured at ACTIVE crossings. 

Ohio for the past five (5) years, has remained in the Top Ten States for vehicle-train collisions (9th) and pedestrian/trespasser incidents(10th). 

Vehicle-Train Collisions
In 2025, as of November 30, Ohio has recorded 64 vehicle-train collisions (9th in Nation) resulting in 20 injuries & 5 fatalities.67.1% of these collisions happened at active crossings.

Pedestrian/Trespasser Incidents
In 2025, as of November 30, Ohio  has recorded 28 Pedestrian/Trespasser incidents (13th in Nation) resulting in 11 injuries and 20 fatalities.
