Rail Safety Education is what we do.
Our rail safety programs include free presentations by authorized volunteers in schools, civic and community organizations as well as specialized training for law enforcement, professional drivers and emergency first responders. We give people the information they need to stay safe around railroad property and rights-of-way. Our programs provide valuable facts about trains, illustrate how drivers can safely navigate highway-rail grade crossings, and reinforce that it's illegal and unsafe to ever walk on or use railroad tracks for recreation.
Current Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) data shows that highway-rail grade crossing collisions and pedestrian trespass on tracks together account for over 95% of all railroad fatalities.
By raising awareness and promoting safe behavior around railroad tracks, these preventable tragedies can be reduced.
- Be aware that trains cannot stop quickly.
- Never drive around lowered gates — it's illegal and dangerous.
- Do not get trapped on the tracks; proceed through a highway-rail grade crossing only if you are sure you can clear the crossing without stopping.
- If your vehicle ever stalls on the tracks, get out and get away from the tracks, even if you do not see a train.
- When you need to cross train tracks, go to a designated crossing, look both ways, and cross the tracks quickly, without stopping.
